Reveling Kings
a poem inspired by 2 Peter 2 (warning of false prophets and teachers)
They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime,
like restless winds
disrupting the dawn;
breathing trouble where rest begins.
Dancing shadows in the Scripture's lamplight,
they drink holy water while they feast on their sins.
The graveyard opens
to swallow their souls
in the pits they dug for righteous men.
Crowns of confidence lift up their heads
while they, in caskets, make their beds,
They sit on their thrones to hide the blindness in their eyes,
but when the Day dawns and every knee bows,
confidence unravels to ignorance.
A clattering sounds as the blind kings fall,
scattering the haughtiness that made them tall,
before the throne of the Morning Star.
In folly they crowned themselves the firsts
among the ones He leads as lasts.
O, fallen kings, did you not hear it,
when the Son of Man blessed the poor in spirit
and gave them the kingdom of Heaven?

Beautiful and evocative. I love "before the throne of the Morning Star". Thank you.
I love the rhythm and rhyme on this poem, Rue! I'd love to see a book of your poetry someday... 💕
